Historic Defeat for No. 23 Kansas Against BYU

No. 23 Kansas suffered a historic 91-57 loss to BYU on Tuesday night at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah, marking one of the worst defeats in the program’s storied history. The 34-point margin tied for the largest loss under head coach Bill Self and was the third-worst defeat in Kansas basketball history, according to ESPN Research. The Jayhawks (17-9, 8-7 Big 12) have now lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, having also fallen to Utah 74-67 on Saturday.

BYU (18-8, 9-6 Big 12) dominated from the start, fueled by efficient shooting and relentless defense. Richie Saunders led the Cougars with 22 points, while Trevin Knell added 15 and Mawot Mag contributed 13. The trio combined for 11 three-pointers, with BYU shooting 52% from the field and making 14 threes overall. The Cougars also dished out 15 assists on their first 15 field goals in the first half, showcasing their offensive fluidity.

Kansas struggled to find any rhythm, committing 15 turnovers and shooting just 36.5% from the field. Hunter Dickinson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Jayhawks competitive. David Coit added 11 points off the bench, but Kansas trailed by as many as 38 points in the second half.

BYU’s 14-2 run early in the game set the tone, giving the Cougars a 22-7 lead just seven minutes in. Kansas briefly cut the deficit to 25-17 after BYU went six minutes without scoring, but the Cougars responded with a flurry of three-pointers to take a 46-26 lead into halftime.

Self called the performance “awful” and acknowledged that BYU “could have beaten anybody tonight.” Dickinson echoed the sentiment, stating that the team would face criticism for the lopsided loss, especially in the era of NIL and heightened expectations for players.

The loss raises questions about Kansas’ ability to regroup as the season progresses. Self emphasized the need for the team to come together and find a way to respond to adversity. Meanwhile, BYU’s victory marked a statement win for the program, which has now won seven of its last nine games after a slow start in Big 12 play.

Kansas will look to bounce back when it hosts Oklahoma State on Saturday, while BYU travels to face Arizona.
