The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has launched its “Where’s My Refund?” tool to help taxpayers track the status of their tax refunds during the 2025 tax season. This online tool provides real-time updates on the processing of tax returns and the issuance of refunds. To use the tool, taxpayers need to enter their Social Security Number, filing status, and the exact refund amount from their tax return. The tool displays one of three statuses: “Return Received” (processing), “Refund Approved” (with an expected issue date), or “Refund Sent” (refund issued).

Refunds are typically issued within 21 calendar days of the IRS accepting the return. For those opting for direct deposit, refunds usually appear in bank accounts within 2 to 5 business days after issuance. Paper checks may take 5 to 7 business days to arrive. However, refunds for taxpayers claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) are delayed until after February 14 due to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act. These refunds are expected to be available by March 3 for those who filed electronically and chose direct deposit.

The IRS recommends electronic filing and direct deposit as the fastest and most secure methods to receive refunds. Taxpayers can check their refund status 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return, 3 to 4 days after e-filing a prior-year return, or 4 weeks after mailing a paper return.
