Los Angeles Faces Flash Floods and Mudslides Amid Powerful Storm
A powerful storm triggered flash flood warnings, mudslides, and evacuations in Los Angeles on February 13, 2025, particularly in areas affected by recent wildfires. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the Palisades Fire burn scar, where heavy rain increased the risk of life-threatening debris flows. Evacuation orders were issued for Pacific Palisades and other burn scar areas, including the Eaton Fire zone, as rainfall rates exceeded thresholds for potential mudslides and flooding.
The storm caused significant disruptions, including a mudslide on Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills, which closed the road. An SUV was swept into the ocean by a debris flow in Malibu, though the driver escaped with minor injuries. In Orange County, mandatory evacuations were ordered for Trabuco Canyon, Bell Canyon, and Hot Springs Canyon due to mudslide fears. Ventura County also announced evacuation warnings for areas near the Mountain Fire burn scar.
Rainfall totals ranged from 1 to 3 inches in coastal and valley areas, with up to 6 to 10 inches in higher terrain. The storm, described as the biggest precipitation producer of the season, prompted extensive preparations, including the deployment of sandbags, barriers, and emergency personnel. By 8 p.m. local time, all flood warnings were canceled, but officials warned that mud and rock slides could still occur after the rain ended.
Residents in affected areas were urged to stay vigilant and prepare for potential evacuations, as the storm’s impacts highlighted the ongoing risks in wildfire-ravaged regions.
