MSNBC Cancels Joy Reid's 'The ReidOut' in Major Programming Overhaul

MSNBC has canceled Joy Reid’s evening show, The ReidOut, as part of a major programming overhaul under the network’s new president, Rebecca Kutler. The final episode of the show, which has been a staple of MSNBC’s primetime lineup for five years, is set to air this week. Reid’s 7 p.m. ET slot will be replaced by a new panel show co-hosted by Alicia Menendez, Michael Steele, and Symone Sanders Townsend, a former spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris.

The decision comes amid declining ratings for The ReidOut, which saw a 28% drop in viewership in February 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, averaging just 973,000 viewers. MSNBC’s overall primetime ratings have also struggled, with the network recording its lowest-ever viewership in January 2025. The shakeup is part of Kutler’s broader strategy to revamp the network’s programming, including changes to dayside, weekend, and primetime lineups.

Reid, a prominent liberal commentator and vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, has been a polarizing figure in cable news. Her show has been marked by controversial moments, including comparisons of Trump’s policies to historical atrocities and remarks about Black women’s disillusionment with American politics. Despite her prominence, Reid’s show has faced criticism for its declining audience and perceived partisanship.

The network’s restructuring also includes other significant changes. Alex Wagner, who previously hosted the 9 p.m. ET slot, will no longer anchor a primetime show but will remain with MSNBC as a correspondent. Jen Psaki, former White House press secretary and host of Inside with Jen Psaki, is expected to receive more airtime as part of the reshuffle.

MSNBC’s overhaul reflects broader challenges facing the network as it seeks to compete with rivals like Fox News and CNN. The changes come as parent company Comcast plans to spin off several NBCUniversal cable networks, including MSNBC, separating it from NBC News. The network is also reportedly seeking to expand its Washington bureau and bolster its domestic and international correspondents ahead of the transition.

Reid’s departure from primetime marks the end of an era for one of MSNBC’s most recognizable voices, as the network pivots to a new chapter under Kutler’s leadership.
