Nationwide Protests Against Trump Administration Set for Presidents Day
Protests against the Trump administration’s actions are planned for Presidents Day, according to organizers of the 50501 Movement. The group, which stands for “50 protests. 50 states. 1 movement,” is responding to what they describe as “the anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration.” The protests are set to take place in several major cities across the U.S. on Monday, Feb. 17, 2025, marking the second nationwide protest by the group following an event held on Feb. 5. Organizers, including Sydney Wilson, a local organizer in Pittsburgh and national press liaison for 50501, say holding the protests on a day dedicated to celebrating U.S. presidents is an ideal moment to voice their concerns.
The protests follow a series of executive orders signed by President Trump, including actions led by billionaire Elon Musk, which have been criticized for their aims to diminish the role of the federal government. During the Feb. 5 protests, participants called for Trump’s impeachment and removal from office, demanded an investigation into Elon Musk, and sought the reinstatement of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives that have been rescinded through executive orders. For the upcoming protests, organizers expect a similar turnout, if not larger, and their demands remain unchanged.
The 50501 Movement is not affiliated with any political party and describes the protests as a “call to action.” The group has garnered substantial support across social media platforms, boasting more than 102,000 members on their Reddit page and more than 7,000 on Discord. Local and state Democratic lawmakers have also supported the protests, with several Michigan state House Democrats joining demonstrators at the state Capitol during the Feb. 5 protests.
Meanwhile, Presidents Day, originally celebrated on Feb. 22 to honor George Washington’s birthday, has evolved into a retail bonanza. The holiday, now observed on the third Monday in February, is often recognized as a time to shop for mattresses, appliances, electronics, and more. The modern celebration of Presidents Day is a result of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, passed in 1971, which shifted the observance of some government holidays, including Washington’s Birthday, to Mondays. While the law did not formally broaden the day to honor President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12, Washington began sharing the holiday spotlight, and advertisers morphed the two presidents’ birthdays into “the sales sound bite” of “President’s Day.”
In addition to the protests and retail sales, Presidents Day is a federal holiday, with regular U.S. mail service suspended and the post office, schools, banks, and the stock market closed. Most major supermarket chains and fast-food chains remain open, making it one of the busiest days for restaurant food delivery.
