Nationwide Protests on Presidents Day; The 50501 Movement Against Trump and Musk Policies
On Presidents Day, February 17, 2025, thousands of protesters across the United States participated in the “50501 Movement,” a nationwide demonstration against the policies and executive orders of President Donald Trump and his administration. The movement, which stands for “50 Protests, 50 States, 1 Movement,” saw rallies in cities such as Boston, Harrisburg, Portland, Salem, and Vancouver, with participants voicing concerns over what they described as anti-democratic and illegal actions by the Trump administration.
In Boston, nearly 1,000 people braved frigid temperatures to march from the Statehouse to City Hall, chanting slogans like “No kings on Presidents Day” and “Elon Musk has got to go.” The protests were organized in part to oppose the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, which aims to cut billions in federal spending. Protesters carried signs criticizing Trump and Musk, with one reading, “Deport Musk, Dethrone Trump.”
In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, hundreds of demonstrators marched from City Island to the state Capitol, expressing outrage over executive orders targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as well as transgender rights. Protesters also criticized Musk’s access to government systems, fearing the compromise of personal information. U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) acknowledged the concerns, stating that while reducing government spending is a priority, safeguarding personal data is equally important.
On the West Coast, protests in Portland, Salem, and Vancouver drew large crowds. In Portland, demonstrators gathered outside City Hall before marching through the streets, while in Salem, protesters rallied outside the Oregon Capitol. Many participants, including first-time protesters, emphasized the importance of standing up against what they perceive as threats to democracy. Karen Wells, a protester in Portland, said, “As long as we show up, stand up, and speak up, we’ve got a fighting chance.”
The 50501 Movement reflects widespread frustration with the Trump administration’s policies, particularly those involving federal spending cuts and the role of Elon Musk in government efficiency efforts. Organizers emphasized peaceful protests and a commitment to upholding the Constitution, as demonstrators across the country made their voices heard on Presidents Day.
