Notre Dame Women's Basketball; Dominating the Court with Star Power and Depth

The Notre Dame women’s basketball team, currently ranked No. 1 in the nation, has been a dominant force this season, led by standout players Hannah Hidalgo, Olivia Miles, and forward Liatu King. While Hidalgo and Miles have garnered much of the attention for their backcourt brilliance, King has emerged as the team’s X-factor, contributing significantly with her athleticism, versatility, and leadership.

King, a graduate transfer from Pittsburgh, is averaging 10.6 rebounds per game and is on pace to break Notre Dame’s single-season rebounding records. She is one of only three players in the nation averaging at least 11 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals per game. Her midrange shooting, with a 55.7% field goal percentage, has been a key asset, and she is working to expand her range to the 3-point line. Beyond her stats, King takes pride in doing the “dirty work” that doesn’t always show up on the box score, earning praise from teammates like Hidalgo, who describes her as a “calm dog” with a unique leadership style.

The Fighting Irish boast the No. 4 scoring offense in Division I, thanks to Hidalgo and Miles, who average 24.9 and 16.7 points per game, respectively. The team is also ranked No. 5 in rebounds per game and No. 3 in defensive rebounds, showcasing their balanced strength on both ends of the court. Head coach Niele Ivey has emphasized the team’s depth and commitment, with players like Sonia Citron and freshman Kate Koval also making significant contributions.

Notre Dame is riding an 18-game winning streak and is poised for a strong finish to the regular season. However, their recent double-overtime loss to No. 13 NC State, 104-95, marked their first ACC defeat of the season. Despite the setback, the Irish remain a top contender for the NCAA Tournament, with their next game against Louisville offering a chance to regain momentum.

The team’s success this season has been a collective effort, with Ivey praising the group’s chemistry and balance. As March Madness approaches, Notre Dame’s combination of star power, depth, and resilience makes them a formidable contender for the national championship.
