Pope Francis in Critical Condition Following Severe Respiratory Crisis

Pope Francis remains in critical condition after suffering a severe respiratory crisis, according to the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalized since February 14, 2025, at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, experienced a “long asthmatic respiratory crisis” and is currently on supplemental oxygen. Medical tests have revealed “initial, mild” kidney failure, though doctors report the situation is under control. The pope is conscious, alert, and “well-oriented,” but his prognosis remains reserved due to the complexity of his condition.

Francis was initially admitted for respiratory issues believed to be related to bronchitis but was later diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. He has also received blood transfusions after tests indicated a condition associated with anemia. Doctors have expressed concern about the potential onset of sepsis, a life-threatening complication, though no signs of it have been detected so far. The Vatican has stated that Francis will remain hospitalized for at least another week.

The pope’s medical team has emphasized that his condition is not life-threatening but cautioned that he is “not out of danger.” Francis has a history of respiratory issues, including chronic bronchitis and a partial lung removal in his youth due to pleurisy. Despite his health challenges, the Vatican released a statement from Francis on Sunday, in which he thanked medical staff and asked for continued prayers.

Public events involving the pope have been canceled, and his recovery will depend on the effectiveness of ongoing drug therapies. The Catholic Church and global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, have expressed their support and prayers for the pontiff’s recovery.
