Postmaster General Louis DeJoy Announces Plans to Step Down
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has announced his plans to step down from his role at the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), calling on the Postal Service Board of Governors to begin the search for his successor. DeJoy, who took office in June 2020, stated that while significant progress has been made under his 10-year “Delivering for America” reform plan, the time has come to prepare for a leadership transition.
In a letter to the Board of Governors, DeJoy emphasized the need for continued reforms to ensure the Postal Service’s financial viability. He highlighted recent achievements, including a rare net profit in the first quarter of fiscal 2025, as evidence that the agency is on the right track. However, USPS still anticipates a $6.9 billion net loss for FY 2025. DeJoy’s plan aims to cut $2 billion in annual transportation costs, $1.5 billion in mail processing costs, and grow revenue by $5 billion annually.
DeJoy’s tenure has been marked by controversy, including widespread mail delays and operational challenges, particularly in cities like Houston, where staffing and logistical issues exacerbated service problems. During a Senate hearing in 2024, DeJoy defended his reform plan, acknowledging service disruptions but arguing that the changes are necessary for long-term sustainability. He also criticized resistance to reform from stakeholders and employees, urging the next postmaster general to remain committed to the ongoing transformation.
Amber McReynolds, chairwoman of the Board of Governors, praised DeJoy for his efforts to modernize the Postal Service and reverse decades of neglect. The search for his successor is now underway, with the goal of ensuring continuity in the agency’s reform efforts. DeJoy’s departure marks the end of a contentious but transformative chapter for USPS, as it continues to navigate financial challenges and adapt to a rapidly changing postal landscape.
