Ryan Palmer Weighs In on PGA Tour's Upcoming Changes

Ryan Palmer, a four-time PGA Tour winner with over 500 career starts, has weighed in on the Tour’s upcoming changes, expressing both support and criticism. Speaking on GOLF’s Subpar Podcast, Palmer praised the decision to reduce the number of exempt players from the top 125 to the top 100 starting in 2026, as well as the plan to trim field sizes from 156 to between 120 and 144 players. He believes these changes will make the Tour more competitive, stating, “The days of playing average and keeping your card are done unless you’ve won in the past year or two.”

However, Palmer voiced concerns about the Signature Event model, particularly the 70-man, no-cut format. He argued that 120-man fields with a cut would provide a better product, suggesting that player-hosted events like the Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the Memorial should feature cuts. Notably, the PGA Tour has already addressed this by instituting a 36-hole cut for these three events in 2025, limiting the field to the top 50 and ties, plus anyone within 10 strokes of the lead.

Palmer’s comments reflect a veteran perspective on the evolving landscape of professional golf, as the PGA Tour adapts to maintain its relevance and competitiveness in the modern sports market.
