Severe Storms Cause Widespread Damage and Power Outages in Metro Atlanta

A line of intense storms swept through metro Atlanta and surrounding areas on Sunday, February 16, 2025, causing widespread power outages and significant damage. The severe weather, which included tornado warnings, heavy winds, and rain, left thousands without electricity. Georgia Power reported that tens of thousands of customers had their power restored early Sunday through the use of “smart grid” technology, which allows for remote restoration even during ongoing storms. Damage assessment teams were deployed as soon as conditions allowed, followed by repair crews to address broken poles, downed wires, and damaged transformers.

By 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Georgia Power had restored power to nearly 170,000 customers. The utility company emphasized the importance of safety, urging residents to avoid downed power lines and standing water near electrical equipment. Customers were also reminded to use portable generators cautiously and to report outages through Georgia Power’s Outage & Storm Center or mobile app.

The storms caused at least one fatality in Atlanta’s Grove Park neighborhood, where a tree fell on a home. The intensity of the weather was highlighted by a recorded wind gust of 69 mph at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Georgia Power continues to work on restoring power to affected areas, with repair efforts ongoing as the storm system exits the state.
