Steve Martin and Martin Short Bring Laughter to SNL's 50th Anniversary Special

Steve Martin kicked off the “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” with a humorous monologue that included a playful jab at his longtime friend and collaborator, Martin Short. The event, which aired on February 16, 2025, celebrated 50 years of “Saturday Night Live” and featured a star-studded lineup of past hosts and cast members. Martin, who has hosted the show 16 times, opened with self-deprecating jokes about aging, quipping, “I turned 79, but I feel like I’m 65 — which is also not good.”

The highlight of the monologue came when Martin Short joined him on stage. Martin introduced Short as “the only Canadian who wasn’t in Schitt’s Creek” and asked if he had his passport. When Short admitted he didn’t, Martin called out, “ICE, get him!” Costumed agents promptly dragged Short away, with him yelling, “I’ll name names! Mike Myers! Jim Carrey!” The bit was a lighthearted nod to Short’s Canadian heritage and their long-standing comedic partnership.

John Mulaney also made an appearance during the monologue, joking about the egos of past “SNL” hosts. “Over the course of 50 years, 894 people have hosted ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and it amazes me that only two of them have committed murder,” Mulaney quipped, likely referencing Robert Blake and O.J. Simpson.

The three-and-a-half-hour special, which aired on NBC and Peacock, was a nostalgic celebration of the show’s legacy, featuring appearances by numerous alumni and iconic sketches. Martin closed his monologue with a tongue-in-cheek message to viewers, suggesting that anyone not enjoying it should “take a good look at yourself in the mirror and ask, ‘When did I abandon joy?’”
