Tragic Shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital Leaves Officer Dead and Five Injured
A tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, February 22, 2025, left one police officer dead and five others injured. The incident began around 10:45 a.m. when the gunman, identified as Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, entered the hospital armed with a handgun and zip ties. He proceeded to the ICU, where he took several staff members hostage and opened fire, injuring three hospital workers—a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian—and a fourth individual who fell during the chaos. All injured hospital staff are reported to be in stable condition.
West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte, 30, was among the officers who responded to the scene. During the confrontation, Duarte was fatally shot, while two other officers from the Northern York County Regional Police Department and Springettsbury Township Police Department were injured but are in stable condition. Duarte, a law enforcement veteran who joined the West York Borough Police Department in 2022, was praised for his dedication and service. He had previously received a “hero award” from Mothers Against Drunk Driving for his work in impaired driving enforcement.
The situation escalated when Archangel-Ortiz zip-tied a staff member’s hands and held her at gunpoint in the hospital hallway. Officers opened fire, killing the gunman. York County District Attorney Tim Barker confirmed that the use of deadly force was justified, stating that the officers’ actions prevented further casualties. Governor Josh Shapiro also commended the bravery of the officers and hospital staff, calling the incident a display of “the very best and the very worst in humanity.”
UPMC Memorial Hospital confirmed that no patients were injured during the shooting. The hospital has established a hotline for families seeking information: (717) 849-5338 or (717) 849-5334. The community has rallied to honor Officer Duarte, with flowers and candles placed at the West York Administration Office in his memory.
The investigation into the motive behind the shooting is ongoing, with authorities noting that Archangel-Ortiz had recent contact with the ICU for a medical purpose involving another person. The incident has left the community in mourning, with local leaders expressing their condolences and gratitude for the swift response of law enforcement and emergency personnel.
