Tragic Shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital Leaves Officer Dead and Six Injured

A tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, February 22, 2025, left one police officer dead and six others injured, including hospital staff and law enforcement. The incident began around 10:35 a.m. when the gunman, identified as Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, entered the hospital armed with a semiautomatic handgun and zip ties. He proceeded to the intensive care unit (ICU), where he held staff hostage and opened fire, shooting three hospital employees—a doctor, nurse, and custodian—before engaging with responding officers.

West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte was killed in the line of duty during the exchange of gunfire. Two other officers from the Northern York and Springettsbury Township Police departments were injured but are in stable condition. A fourth hospital staff member sustained injuries from a fall during the chaos. The gunman was fatally shot by police after he held a staff member at gunpoint, with their hands zip-tied.

York County District Attorney Timothy Barker confirmed that the shooting was a targeted incident, noting that Archangel-Ortiz had previously been at the ICU for a medical purpose involving another individual. Court records revealed that the gunman had a history of minor offenses, including a recent citation for driving with a suspended license. Barker stated that the officers’ use of deadly force was “absolutely justified.”

WellSpan York Hospital received five patients from the shooting, with two released by the following day. UPMC Memorial confirmed that no patients were injured during the incident, and the hospital is now secure. A hotline has been established for families seeking information about patients.

Governor Josh Shapiro and Attorney General Dave Sunday responded to the scene, with Shapiro ordering flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Officer Duarte. Shapiro praised the bravery of the responding officers, stating, “Because of their work, lives were saved here today at UPMC Memorial Hospital… sadly, we lost one of those heroes today.”

The community has rallied in support of the victims and their families, with flowers and tributes laid outside the West York Borough Police Department. The incident marks the first time in the department’s 108-year history that an officer has been killed in the line of duty.
