Tragic Shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital Leaves Officer Dead, Six Injured
A tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, February 22, 2025, left one police officer dead and six others injured, including hospital staff and law enforcement officers. The incident began around 10:35 a.m. when the shooter, identified as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, entered the hospital armed with a handgun and zip ties. Ortiz reportedly headed straight to the intensive care unit (ICU), where he held several staff members hostage and discharged his weapon, injuring three medical staff members.
West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte was killed during the exchange of gunfire. Two other officers, from Springettsberry Township and North York County Regional Police, were injured but are in stable condition. A nurse and a custodian were also shot and are in stable condition, while a doctor was grazed by a bullet and did not require medical attention. A fourth staff member sustained injuries from a fall during the chaos.
Law enforcement responded swiftly, with multiple agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police and the York County Quick Response Team, arriving at the scene. Ortiz was eventually shot and killed by officers after he held a staff member at gunpoint in the hospital hallway. Authorities confirmed that the use of deadly force was justified.
Governor Josh Shapiro ordered U.S. and Commonwealth flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Officer Duarte. WellSpan York Hospital treated five individuals injured in the shooting, two of whom have since been released. UPMC Memorial Hospital has since been secured, and a hotline has been established for families seeking information about patients.
The community has rallied in support of the victims and their families, with local officials expressing their condolences and gratitude for the swift response of law enforcement and emergency personnel. The incident has prompted WellSpan Health to enhance security measures at its facilities, including the use of metal detectors and armed officers at emergency department entrances.
