William Byron Claims Historic Back-to-Back Daytona 500 Wins
William Byron secured his second consecutive Daytona 500 victory in a dramatic finish at Daytona International Speedway on February 17, 2025. The Hendrick Motorsports driver took the lead after a last-lap wreck involving race leader Denny Hamlin, who spun out on the backstretch during a green-white-checker restart. The crash was triggered by a collision between Christopher Bell and Cole Custer with less than five laps remaining, which also sent Ryan Preece’s car flipping into the wall.
Byron’s win marked the 10th Daytona 500 victory for Hendrick Motorsports, breaking a tie with Petty Enterprises for the most wins in the event’s history. At 27 years old, Byron also became the youngest driver to win multiple Daytona 500s, surpassing Jeff Gordon’s previous record. This victory made him the fifth driver in history to achieve back-to-back Daytona 500 wins, a feat last accomplished by Denny Hamlin in 2019-2020.
Tyler Reddick finished second, marking his best Daytona 500 result in seven starts, while Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time NASCAR champion, claimed third place—his best finish in the race since his 2013 victory. Chase Briscoe, the pole-sitter, finished fourth, and John Hunter Nemechek rounded out the top five.
The race was marred by multiple wrecks, including a late-race incident that eliminated several contenders. Despite the chaos, Ryan Blaney won Stage 2 and took the early lead in the championship standings with 51 points, narrowly ahead of Byron. The Daytona 500, NASCAR’s most prestigious race, once again delivered high drama and historic milestones, solidifying Byron’s place among the sport’s elite.
