William Byron Triumphs Again at the 2025 Daytona 500
The 2025 Daytona 500, NASCAR’s most prestigious race, kicked off its 67th edition at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday, February 16, with a start time moved up to 1:30 p.m. ET due to potential rain. The race, known as “The Great American Race,” featured a star-studded lineup, including pole-sitter Chase Briscoe, who secured his first Daytona 500 pole in his debut with Joe Gibbs Racing. Briscoe was joined on the front row by Austin Cindric, with Bubba Wallace and Erik Jones starting in the second row.
The race was broadcast nationally on Fox and available for streaming via the Fox Sports app and Fubo, which offered a free trial. Weather conditions were a concern, with a 50-60% chance of rain and gusty winds up to 35 mph, leading to multiple delays and a red flag early in the race. Despite the interruptions, the event delivered dramatic moments, including a wild finish under green-flag conditions.
William Byron, the defending champion, emerged victorious for the second consecutive year after a chaotic final lap. Byron capitalized on a multi-car crash involving Denny Hamlin and Austin Cindric, surging from ninth to first to claim the checkered flag. Tyler Reddick finished second, while NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson, making a semi-retirement appearance, secured a surprising third-place finish.
The race was marked by several major incidents, including a terrifying crash that sent Ryan Preece airborne with four laps remaining. Preece walked away unscathed, but the crash set up an overtime restart. In the closing laps, Cole Custer triggered a three-wide battle that led to a pileup, allowing Byron to seize the win.
Byron’s victory gave team owner Rick Hendrick a record-breaking 10 Daytona 500 wins, surpassing Petty Enterprises. The race also featured notable performances from drivers like Chase Briscoe, who finished fourth, and John Hunter Nemechek, who rounded out the top five.
The 2025 Daytona 500 once again lived up to its reputation as a thrilling and unpredictable event, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of American motorsport.
