Yankees End Decades-Old Facial Hair Ban, Embracing Change
The New York Yankees have officially lifted their decades-old ban on facial hair, a policy that had been in place since 1976. The decision, announced on Friday, was influenced by new closer Devin Williams and a group of former Yankees stars, including Ron Guidry, Andy Pettitte, and CC Sabathia. Williams, who joined the Yankees in an offseason trade, expressed his discomfort with shaving his signature beard, which he had never done in his major league career. After discussing the matter with manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman, Williams’ concerns reached owner Hal Steinbrenner, who ultimately decided to revise the policy.
The rule change allows players to grow “well-groomed” beards, a significant shift from the previous policy that permitted only mustaches. Steinbrenner emphasized that the decision was driven by the desire to attract top talent, as some players had reportedly avoided the Yankees due to the facial hair restrictions. Current players, including Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton, welcomed the change, with Cole noting the symbolic transition to a “different legacy.”
Williams, who shaved his beard upon joining the team, expects it to grow back within a few weeks. The move has been praised as a step toward modernizing the Yankees’ image while maintaining their commitment to winning. Manager Aaron Boone summed up the sentiment, stating, “It was time for this.”
