31st SAG Awards Celebrate Film and Television Excellence
The 31st Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, held on February 23, 2025, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, celebrated outstanding performances in film and television. Hosted by Kristen Bell, the ceremony honored a diverse array of winners, including Timothée Chalamet, Demi Moore, and the casts of Conclave, Shōgun, and Only Murders in the Building.
Conclave, a thriller about the election of a new pope, won the top prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Ralph Fiennes accepted the award on behalf of the ensemble, emphasizing the importance of community in the acting profession. Meanwhile, Shōgun dominated the television categories, winning four awards, including Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series and individual honors for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. Only Murders in the Building took home the award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series, with Selena Gomez humorously noting the absence of co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin.
Timothée Chalamet won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, while Demi Moore earned the female counterpart for The Substance. Moore, visibly emotional, reflected on her career and the challenges of ageism in Hollywood. Zoe Saldaña won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Emilia Pérez, delivering a heartfelt speech about inclusivity and love.
The ceremony also paid tribute to Los Angeles, which is recovering from devastating wildfires, with Bell honoring first responders. Technical glitches and a pre-recorded interruption during Jane Fonda’s Lifetime Achievement Award speech added a touch of unpredictability to the night. Fonda, a longtime activist, urged the audience to remain courageous and united in the face of political upheaval.
The SAG Awards, streamed live on Netflix, highlighted the resilience and creativity of the entertainment industry, setting the stage for the upcoming Oscars.
