Alex Ovechkin Nears NHL Goal Record with Hat Trick

Alex Ovechkin moved closer to hockey immortality with a hat trick in the Washington Capitals’ 7-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday. The 39-year-old superstar scored his 880th, 881st, and 882nd career goals, bringing him within 13 of surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894. Ovechkin’s performance marked his 32nd career hat trick, tying him for fifth all-time in NHL history.

Ovechkin’s first goal came on a precise wrist shot from the high slot, while his second was a signature one-timer from the left circle on the power play. His third goal, an empty-netter from 139 feet, sealed the hat trick and sent a cascade of hats onto the ice from the sellout crowd of 18,573 at Capital One Arena. The Russian forward acknowledged the fortunate bounce that led to his third goal, saying, “Got lucky, broken stick. But I have plenty of time to see what happens out there.”

Despite missing 16 games earlier this season due to a broken leg, Ovechkin has scored 29 goals in 41 games, maintaining a remarkable pace. He needs 13 more goals in Washington’s final 25 games to break Gretzky’s record. Capitals coach Spencer Carbery praised Ovechkin’s relentless drive, noting, “He could’ve had six tonight, like realistically,” referring to the numerous scoring chances Ovechkin created.

Ovechkin’s teammates also marveled at his hunger for goals. Forward Tom Wilson said, “I’ve never seen a guy so hungry. Some guys score and they think, ‘OK, I had a good night.’ He comes back to the bench and he’s asking if he can go out again like right away.”

The Capitals’ victory moved them a point ahead of the Winnipeg Jets for the NHL lead. Ovechkin’s historic pursuit continues to captivate fans and players alike, with his next milestone being his 19th season with at least 30 goals. As the season progresses, the hockey world watches eagerly to see if Ovechkin can etch his name atop the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring list.
