Franke, a Utah-based mother of six, gained fame through her YouTube channel, which documented her family’s life and amassed over 2.5 million subscribers. However, concerns about her parenting methods began to surface, with viewers noting instances of harsh discipline and questionable behavior, such as excluding children from Christmas celebrations. In August 2023, Franke’s 12-year-old son escaped their home and sought help from a neighbor, leading to her arrest. Authorities found the child malnourished, with duct tape around his limbs and scratches on his body. Franke and her business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt, were later sentenced to up to 30 years in prison for child abuse.
The documentary provides new insights into the family’s dynamics, with Shari and Chad recounting their experiences of growing up on camera and enduring abuse. Chad described being forced to film as punishment, while Shari recalled helping her brother clean blood off walls after a beating. Kevin Franke, who separated from Ruby in 2022, claimed he was unaware of the abuse and was manipulated by both Franke and Hildebrandt. The series also explores Franke’s relationship with Hildebrandt, a controversial life coach who moved into the Franke home and influenced the family’s decisions.
